RUNNING ON BEER AND A SNOW SCRAPER

Sometimes things just elude a plausible explanation.

On Friday, the OPP were conducting a RIDE program on Grey Road 17 in the township of Georgian Bluffs.  A driver entered the checkpoint at around 5:20 PM.  He didn’t leave in his own vehicle.

Officers found “signs of impairment” at the stop, and observed open liquor “readily available,” an interesting way to describe what must have been 100 cans of beer, most empty, completely filling up the front passenger side of the vehicle.  It looked to me that the whole vehicle was held together by scotch tape and best wishes.

A 61 year-old driver was charged, not a big surprise.  But it’s the eight total charges that raise eyebrows and makes one wonder just what kind of people are out there on Ontario’s roadways.

In addition to operation while impaired, the man was charged with four counts of operation while prohibited, four counts of driving while under suspension, possession of property obtained by crime under $5000, use of an unauthorized licence plate, driving a motor vehicle with liquor readily available, and operating a motor vehicle without insurance.

It looks like we’ve got some guy who doesn’t give much of a hoot for the safety of our roads and the people on them. Nor does he seem to have any respect for sanctions already levied against him for previous behaviours.

The driver was released and is to appear in court in Orillia sometime in the future.  I just hope he doesn’t drive to his court appearance, or anywhere else for that matter.  I’m assuming he had to make bail, rather than simply being released with conditions, because he’s more than demonstrated a disregard for conditions.
