Alex Murdaugh is the most famous man in America.
I have to admit that, prior to the last month or so, I’d never heard of the guy, accused of killing his wife and son at the family kennels in June of 2021.
That’s some serious business, that. Murder is bad enough. Murdering your wife is worse still. Murdering your wife and son, the worst.
But bam, look at him go! Currently on trial for the murders, Murdaugh is probably one of the most easily recognizable humans in North America. On the news every night, the talk of the water-cooler crowd, and a current CNN special devoted to the case. This guy is getting the five-star exposure treatment, and as they say sometimes in the PR business, sometimes bad news is still good news if notoriety is the goal. If Murdaugh was after notoriety, he’d be a wealthy man.
Regardless of the murder trial and whatever might be decided there, it does appear that Alex is a world-class schmuck, also accused of ripping off clients and ripping off the government in the form of tax evasion. Even if he manages to escape a conviction in the murder trial, he’s still likely going to jail for a long time. Remember, this is the United States, where, if you kill someone you might get out in 15 years or so, if they don’t kill you as they do in some states. But steal money? By God you’ll be looking at 300 years plus in the clink. So it looks like Alex is going to be wearing a jumpsuit matching his hair for a very long time.
But why the fascination? I haven’t really been following the whole story because it feels like a circus of sorts. Plus, it makes me feel like I’m slow-driving past an accident scene if I pay too much attention.
What makes one take the life of another is a mystery to me, never mind the mystery of why a person would kill two family members. Perhaps if I wait long enough, I can just catch the sequel, The Murdaugh Mysteries, to find out.
