U.S. CLOSER TO KEEPING CLOCKS THE SAME YEAR-ROUND

Eastern Stand Time?  Daylight Savings Time?

This weekend we get set to do that semi-annual ritual of moving our clocks forward or backward an hour.  We either fall-back or spring-ahead when it comes to the clock, and it causes us all manner of mayhem in the short term as we adjust to the “lost” or “gained” hour.

There’s been recent momentum to leave the hands of the clock alone and have them consistent throughout the year.  But many Canadian provinces are wary of such a move, as they don’t want to be out of synch with American states right across the border.  That lack of coordination could cost a lot of money economically.

But now in the United States there appears to be bi-partisan support for keeping the clock the same throughout the year.  In fact, it seems that the Americans are getting reasonably closer to legislating the single clock/year plan.

Daylight Savings Time was first introduced during WWI to allow factories to increase their productivity by having working hours take place in maximum daylight.

This may soon change with the Americans getting closer to agreeing upon keeping it the same year-round.

One province, Saskatchewan, does this already.  Yukon as well.

If the U.S. changes their attitude towards clocks, you can be sure the rest of us will be right behind them.
