AMERICA WANTS GAZA TOO

Imagine, two criminals getting together to commit a crime.

America’s Donald Trump and Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu.

Both needed to win elections in order to stay out of jail.  Both succeeded.  It’s an irony of democracy where the system can allow thugs like these to take charge by taking advantage of a system based upon freedom and government of the people, by the people, and for the people.  Too bad people can make mistakes.  Big ones.

And they never ever learn.  Not ever.  And whoever said that those who refuse to learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them?  Well, that guy was on to something, because here we are, again.

Hell, even Hitler was elected back in 1933.  The Germans never saw an election again until 1949, sixteen years and 8.8 million World War 2 deaths later.  To say they might have made a big mistake back in 1933 is a huge understatement.

In that same war, the United States lost about 408,000 killed in terms of war dead, all of them paying the ultimate sacrifice to fight against an evil that now seems to be taking hold in their very own country.  I guess history can be funny like that.  I guess I just feel bad for all the American children who never saw life, or never saw their fathers, because those men died in a struggle to rid the world of a fanatical tyranny before they could become fathers, or before they could finish being fathers.

Donald Trump has a solution to the vexatious problem that is the Gaza Strip.  He’s going to take it over, plant an American flag in the dust, and build resort hotels, the American answer to everything.  And he’s steadfast in his insistence to remove over 2 million Palestinians from the territory in order to do it.

I’ve criticized the United States for a lot of things, every single one of them deserved.  But I’ve always had this inherent trust in Americans to essentially do the right thing in the end.  That is, until now.  That trust is gone, and I can’t say if it will ever return in my lifetime.

When the so-called Fortress of Democracy engages in ethnic cleansing — what else can this be called? — then the markers are fully in place to see the Americans in a different light.

As enemies.

Forty-six thousand Canadians were killed in World War 2, fighting the same tyranny, shouldering the same cause, except we were doing it for 27 months before the United States finally got around to it after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor.  In the First World War, Canada lost 66,000 war dead fighting a war that the Americans joined some 31 months later.

We, Canadians, and people like us, are the fortress of democracy.  The Americans are just a bunch of guys who have the most guns and the greatest desire to use them.  They’re only good when they’re on your side, and we took it for granted that they’d always be.  For this mistake, they’ve made us look and feel like fools.

The American way of things has always been more or less the same.  They see something they like and they ask for it.  If the answer is no, then they’ll usually offer to buy it.  And if the answer is still no, then they’ll just take it, and if they have to mop the streets with machine gun fire, so be it.  It gets the kinks out of those twitchy trigger fingers of theirs.

Trump’s plan for Gaza is nothing short of loathsome.  I can’t think of a more damning word.

Reprehensible?  Abhorrent?  Perhaps all three.

So way to go, America.  Way to go Americans.  Feel really good about yourselves for being the bad-guys now, which I guess was only a matter of time, given your mind-set and the special role you assign yourselves among the peoples of the world.

A good chunk of the world’s population hated you and your country before all this.  Now you’ve managed to get the other chunk to feel the same way.  Nice going.

Sorry, I forgot, you’ve got Russia.

The solutions to the Gaza question were never going to be easy, never going to be anything but complicated so long as Israel felt threatened by its neighbours.  Pushing 2 million Palestinians into neighbouring Arab countries is only going to make things worse for the Israelis, if losing Arab allies like Egypt and Jordan means anything to them.  Those two nations are friendly to America as well, or at least they were until this clown and his clown Secretary of State Marco Rubio hit the scene with their Made In America solution.

As for the reprehensible Netanyahu, a legitimate war criminal, this is all fantastic, as he successfully ties the United States into the Israeli defence of the homeland, making America a fact on the ground that nobody in their right mind would want to mess with.

Hitler was successful because the German military thought they could control him.  That was a world-class misjudgement.  I wonder if American military leaders have the capacity to understand history.  Two days ago the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff was fired because he was too “woke” and possibly too black.  A few other high-ranking generals were purged as well.

These are the lessons that seem to be repeating.

We’re not looking for “good Americans” who simply go along to get along, just like the “good Germans” of the 1930s and 1940s.

We’re looking for patriots, like the kind existing in the 1770s and 1780s.

That’s the America the world needs.  And that Americans need.
