I got word of another community gathering in support of OPSEU 472 taking place at Renfrew’s Low Square, home of Renfrew’s Town Hall. There was talk of treats, light snacks, and face painting.
Like I was going to miss that.
Again, I saw amazing spirit, amazing caring, amazing love.
I wonder if they’re experiencing any of that kind of thing over at Fort Lavallee?
Probs not. Don’t know why they would be. Given what they’re doing, or attempting to do to these people can’t have much joy attached to it, unless they’re the kind of people who break out the cigars and scotch tumblers to celebrate being the villains in the ever-growing sentiment of public opinion.
OPSEU Local 472 attended an event organized by community members and caring stakeholders, an event held at the central location of Renfrew’s Town Square. It was well-attended, and it not being my first event, I noticed several people in attendance I’d not seen before, and I’ve been at this for over a month.
That’s the thing. With each passing day, and each passing event, I see more and more people, good people.
Upstanding people.
And it helps me to understand that the union, and their ever-increasing supporters, have more upstanding people in their corner than management seems to have in theirs, just in terms of simple numbers.
It just another example of how much it sucks to be the captain of a sinking ship.
And that Day Program that the Executive-Director allegedly has in her cross-hairs for elimination? All I can guess is that, from what I’m hearing anyways, if she tries to notch her gunslinger belt with the cancellation of that program here, as she apparently did in Pembroke, then there will be a significant political, perhaps even professional price to pay. She won’t get it for free, that’s for sure. It will definitely leave a mark.
She, the Executive-Director, has lost the ability to do or say anything she wants without the consequences of oversight and accountability, not from her seemingly hapless Board of Directors, but from the public at large.
She may, as momentum shifts decidedly in the union’s favour, become a casualty of her own hubris.
But there’s still time. Perhaps some some sort of epiphany will take hold.
She could talk if she wanted to but she hides behind the whole “funder” thing. There are plenty of issues to discuss, and while some are money-related, and connected to funding, others are simply ideological, and others mechanical.
She should get out and talk to people, just in case being in that war bunker of hers has cut her off from what’s really happening on the outside.
It’s never too late to do the right thing.
